Will Samsung Flash Memory Change Smartphones Forever?

Samsung Electronics has announced progress in flash memory that could change the phone industry forever. The company recently put out a press release detailing what they’re saying is the industry first 256-gigabyte embedded memory, a phone that can outperform PCs in certain ways.

Samsung said:

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced that it is now mass producing the industry’s first 256-gigabyte (GB) embedded memory based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard, for next-generation high-end mobile devices. The newly introduced embedded memory features outstanding performance for mobile devices that exceeds that of a typical SATA-based SSD for PCs.

So how will the new Samsung UFS memory change phones specifically? Samsung says that this new phone is being made with the need for ultra-fast speed and large data capacity in mind. Everyone who wants a brand new phone that can seamlessly support HD video, multitask, watch 4K Ultra HD movies on a split screen while searching for images or downloading video clips, this is the audience this memory upgrade is targeted towards.

The phone will be able to use two lanes of data to transfer up to 850 MB per second (which they say is nearly twice as much as a typical SATA-based SSD used in PCs) and support up to 260 MB per second of sequential writing to make phones around three times faster than high-performance external micro SD cards. They say that with more USB 3.0 interfaces, data transfers between mobile devices will be even faster, allowing a 5 GB full-HD movie (around 90 mins of movie time) to transfer in 12 seconds. On top of all of this, the chip will be compact, even smaller than an external micro SD card, allowing for greater flexibility to smartphone designers.

“By providing high-density UFS memory that is nearly twice as fast as a SATA SSD for PCs, we will contribute to a paradigm shift within the mobile data storage market,” Joo Sun Choi, the executive vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing for Samsung Electronic, said. “We are determined to push the competitive edge in premium storage line-ups – OEM NVMe SSDs, external SSDs, and UFS – by moving aggressively to enhance performance and capacity in all three markets.”

Samsung released their 128 GB UFS memory last year, and now they’ve double it; the company is looking forward to getting the 256 GB UFS memory out into the world to match global demand and remain dominant in the market. There’s no word on pricing yet, but you can be certain this will change the face of premium smartphones as we know it.
