New Uses for That Old Smartphone – Improve Home Security

It seems like every year, no matter what type of smartphone you may already have, that there is some type of upgrade available with new features so that you feel compelled to run out and get the latest and greatest available to you. While that can be a fine upgrade for you, where does that leave you with your old smartphone/ Some places may let you trade it in for a credit, but for the most part his phone is just going to sit in drawer somewhere before you finally get rid of it. Instead of just letting it collect dust, you can take advantage of some new applications and technology and turn your old smartphone into your own home security system.

How a Smartphone Becomes a Security System

Security systems for your home can be very expensive. Not only do you have to invest in all of the cameras and equipment to provide the protection but you very often end up signing up for some type of security protection service as well that includes some type of monthly fee for the service. If you have a large home with many areas to watch, this may be the best option available to you, provided you have the money to spend on a good system.  If you have a smaller area with really only one main access point, instead of spending a lot of money on a new system you can make use of your old phone and turn it into your own security camera without any fuss at all. All you really need to do this is your old phone, some type of stand to hold and charge the phone for you, and a security system app to run everything for you.

A Basic System with Little Effort

For all that goes into a home security system, you can find all of the same workings right in your smartphone. The phone can work as a motion detector, sensor and alarm system all in one. All you need to do is place your phone in the stand, have the camera pointed in the direction that you want to monitor and then get the application that you want for security. For Android users, an application called Salient Eye can monitor everything and send you text and email alerts when something triggers the system. It begins taking pictures that are uploaded to cloud storage for you to view. Apple users can get the same for their iPhone in an application called Manything, which records video as well for you to view.

Security cameras made from your old smartphones can give you a great option of ways to use your devices that might not normally have any use at all for yourself. You can save yourself hundreds on a security system for your home or even use this idea as a portable security system to bring with you on vacation or to hotels to make sure you and your belongings are protected the whole time you are there.
