How A.I. and Minimalism Is Changing Cyber Security

The new face of cyber security in the future may not be antiviral software that you have to install on each and every smart device. No, it may be simple, unobtrusive devices that provide blanket protection on all devices in your home with as little management needed as possible.

When most people think cyber security they think of expensive antiviral software that come with subscription plans and must be manually installed and licensed on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, phones and the works. It can be a little cumbersome, and less tech-savvy consumers may find it difficult to keep up. That’s why devices like Dojo and F-Secure SENSE are debuting, with the idea of artificial intelligence and minimalism changing how we look at cyber security.

Both devices and the teams behind them–the Israeli team of self-proclaimed “ninjas” behind Dojo and the Finnish team that makes up F-Secure–believe in the use of A.I. to make cyber security more evolved. Whereas many antiviral programs hope to stop threats by scanning and detecting, Dojo and SENSE use A.I. to listen and sense unusual activity. The programs monitor traffic and activity and react accordingly. If something seems suspicious the devices take immediate reaction and use constantly updated information to figure out how you may be in the process of attack, and what to do about it.

In many ways, this doesn’t sound all that different from current programs that do the same. And subscriptions will be needed to keep the devices in use and constantly updated. And there’s no way to see how effective these two particular devices are until they’re widely sold and tested against a world of cyber threats. But the idea that one device can connect everything, provide a blanket of protection, and do so from one little device–like a mini-clock tower that tells the time and temperature, or a little rock that pulses light–is one that could be both user friendly and actually effective if implemented and advertised well. Considering each service’s mobile app support and unlimited access to a dedicated security support team, and we may all have tiny objects–like clocks, rock, pens, pictures and more–that protect our homes in the future.

It may even be funny to think that hacker thieves in coming years may need to rely on old-school robbery to even breach our cyber security, assuming targeted victims don’t also have actual security systems for their homes as well. One thing’s for certain with our new digital age: crime and security are nothing like they used to be.
