A Lamp Powered by Gravity

One of the things most people in the more developed world take for granted is the use of electricity. You likely walk into your home each evening after work and flip on the light switch without much thought to help you light up the room and do whatever you would like to do at that time. While this is a great modern convenience for you that has become an expectation in the modern world, there are still over a billion people in the world that do not have access to regular light and electricity in their homes. For these people, providing light in the evenings is a regular chore that they must handle through the use of fires, candles, kerosene lamps and more, all of which can be very expensive to people. Now there is a breakthrough that stands to change all of that with the creation of a lamp powered by gravity.

The GravityLight Changes Everything

The GravityLight was discovered and developed by two British designers to provide an easy and low-cost solution for lighting in homes that do not have any form of electricity in them. The GravityLight does not use the traditional power outlet that you would normally plug a light into in order to generate the power needed to light a lamp. It also does not rely on any solar panels that can be very expensive for the typical person around the world. Instead the lamp makes use of a gravity system to provide light that is not only highly effective but very affordable. The light works on a system of weights and pulleys just as many devices have in the past. The light harnesses the power of the weights being moved downward. Users pull a 25-pound weight up to the top of the cord and the weight slowly goes down, generating energy that powers the LED light that can provide up to 30 minutes of light, depending on how high up the weight is pulled.

What This Device Means to the World

A device of this nature can be revolutionary to the parts of the world that do not have electricity or could not afford electrical or other methods to provide light in the evenings. This can be ideal to remote locations that were never able to make use of light in the nighttime so that they can do and accomplish more without the fear of spending a great deal of money. The possibilities of the impact of a device like this seem to be great.

While the GravityLight is still being developed and refined with a fundraising campaign still going on, the device is not far from being a reality in the marketplace. This form of light can provide a very affordable alternative to those that may never have had a chance for lights in the evening hours before. This can help to create a safer, more effective and cheaper source for light for many areas of the world.
